Monumental Animals

  • Giraffe: 10.6′ x 6′ x 1′
  • Pig: 7′ x 4′ x 1.5′
  • Year completed: 2016

In looking anew at sacred animals, I chose animals that have played a considerable role in human civilization and in art. The giraffe represents a wild animal that is also tame. The pig is a tame animal that is often wild.

In my design, the tameness of the giraffe is represented by its long, lean sinewy form. The wildness of the pig is represented by its massive low stocky form. The pig has been viewed as both sacred and unclean. Aristotle called pigs, “the animal most like people.” Pigs represent the extremes of human joy, fear, celebration, ridicule and repulsion.
