Arcadia Festival Place

  • Festival Park in downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan on 2.5 acres
  • 2000-2002
  • Opened 2004

The goal for Arcadia Festival Place in downtown Kalamazoo was to design a park that would serve the needs of more than 50 festivals throughout the year—from Greek Fest to Rib Fest to Black Arts Fest to Irish Fest—and to serve the public the rest of the year as a park and a focal point for the city. In addition, the park needed to be in harmony with the existing 1880s to 1920s character of the downtown including a block designed by Louis Sullivan in the 1890s.

The final design includes a band shell, children’s playground, covered pavilion for families and school groups, walkways, green spaces and flowers. Arcadia Festival Place is now a highlight for the city and the surrounding region and is the most-common photographed location in Kalamazoo.
